Adventures on Magic River

http://www.magicriverwv.com/

Welcome. The fish are heading for the deep water to slumber during the long nights and cold, icy days of West Virginia winter. The river has filled with leaves, meals for the small organisms that are at the low end of the food chain. The beaver have fattened up and are going to spend a lot more time in their lodges along the river bank, pulling their recliners up close to the TV set to watch the episodes of Lost they missed while they were out working their long teeth against the willow trees this summer. And for the prudent kayaker, it means the water is pretty cold, and it's time to lay up the paddles for another year. Sad but true, if you are prudent.

I met such a lot of really nice people this summer, and I want to thank them all for visiting and coming out on the Mon with me. I hope you all have a very nice winter.

I paddled 127 miles down the Mon from June 20-26. Here's an illustrated narrative about it. Also, the Monongahela Revival project to clean up litter on the river went well this summer. This was the first year of the program, and this winter I'll be thinking of ways to improve it and make an even better experience for the Monongahela Monitor crew next summer. You may want to read my "blog", which I hope to update every so often. I have good prospects of being down around the river some this winter, having met the proprietor of Mark's Marina, and he said I could come by and hang in the boat yard some this winter. So there might be some good yarns shared there.

Let's talk about next year. Sales pitch: If you are planning a vacation or even a short business trip in the north central part of West Virginia, think about a guided historic/nature kayak tour on the Monongahela River near Morgantown, the home of West Virginia University. This beautiful part of the river is only about 1.5 hours from Pittsburgh, Pa., so it makes a great one-day get-a-way. Season begins in May -ends around the last of October.
